The 14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration, organised by the European chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SERE), was held from the 26th to the 30th of August in Tartu, Estonia. We are delighted that project partner Estonia University of Life Sciences (EMU) was able to represent FRAMEwork, delivering two oral presentations.

The conference takes place every two years and offers an opportunity to foster the reciprocal exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experiences among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across Europe who are working on ecological restoration.

The theme of the conference this year was “Bridging Science, Practice, and Policy of Nature Restoration” and sessions covered topics ranging from the theory and practice of restoring various ecosystems (wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers, agroecosystems, urban and marine ecosystems) to the socioeconomic and political contexts of ecological restoration.

Of course, ecological restoration is a key topic on political and scientific agendas at the moment, with the EU officially adopting a new Nature Restoration Law in June this year which sets legally binding restoration targets for the long-term recovery of nature in Europe. This was an important context for the conference, and there was a special focus on discussions around developing effective, knowledge-driven paths to meet the new legislations targets.

FRAMEwork partner EMU gave two presentations to a session on “Returning biodiversity to agricultural ecosystems: above and below ground”:

Silva Vilumets introduced an Estonian case study in a presentation titled “The impact of abandoned lands on natural pest control in arable lands”.

Riina Kaasik presented on the abundance and species composition of wild bees in Estonia, using data from the Estonian FRAMEwork farmer cluster, in a  presentation titled “Insights into Wild Bee Abundance in Estonian Agricultural Landscape”.

The conference was attended by 600 participants from 42 countries. Thank you to our partners at EMU for ensuring a FRAMEwork presence at such an impactful event.
